Casuarina Prison is Western Australia’s primary maximum security facility for adult male prisoners, providing services for high-risk and high-needs cohorts, including those serving long term sentences.
This project expands the prison’s capacity at the existing site and includes infrastructure critical to managing an increased prisoner population identified as high needs and high risk that will help strengthen safety and security for staff, prisoners and the broader community.
Construction is delivered in several stages, with Stage 1 completed in 2020, delivering 512 beds, Stage 2, Tranche 1 delivering 292 beds and Stage 2, Tranche 2 currently underway, which will deliver 81 beds and upgraded infrastructure.
The expansion involves a combination of new and upgraded facilities and the prison will remain operational throughout the works.
Enhanced safety for staff, prisoners and the community.
Greater confidence in the justice system through improved outcomes for prisoners on their rehabilitative journey.
A more cost-effective justice system with better utilisation of the prison’s capacity to help improve operational efficiency.
The Casuarina Prison Expansion will increase capacity and enhance safety, security and infrastructure.
