Honouring Country: Smoking ceremony held at new Women and Babies Hospital site

4 November 2025

In October 2025, project partners and Aboriginal Elders gathered at the new Women and Babies Hospital site within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct in Murdoch for a smoking ceremony, marking an important milestone in the delivery of the new health facility.

The ceremony provided an opportunity to acknowledge Country and pay deep respect to the Whadjuk Noongar people, the traditional custodians of the land on which the hospital is being built.

It was a powerful reminder of the project’s significance - not only in delivering future-focused healthcare, but also strengthening connections to culture, place and community.

Led by Elder Tina Hayden, the smoking ceremony created a moment of calm reflection and shared purpose. As smoke drifted gently across the site, it symbolised cleansing, protection and a respectful welcome – intentions that set the tone for a safe, mindful and respectful journey ahead as construction progresses.

The ceremony also marked a meaningful milestone for a project that will support the many dimensions of women’s health and well being as the new Women and Babies Hospital offers expanded services, choice and care for women, newborns and families across Western Australia.

We thank everyone who came together to honour Country, culture and community at this meaningful moment. As site works progress, the values reflected in this ceremony will guide the creation of a hospital grounded in respect, connection and care.
